Our Approach

我们的教学理念

How we teach matters as much as what we teach. Our methodology is grounded in decades of educational research — ensuring every session builds lasting capability.

How We Teach

The Science Behind the Logic

教学法的科学基础

Our curriculum is grounded in decades of educational research, ensuring every session is designed for maximum learning impact.

CLIL Framework

内容与语言整合学习

Content and Language Integrated Learning is the global gold standard for bilingualism. When students learn engineering through Mandarin, they develop 'Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency' — research shows CLIL students outperform traditional language learners in both fluency and problem-solving.

Comprehensible Input

可理解性输入

Linguist Stephen Krashen's research shows we acquire language by understanding messages, not memorizing rules. When a student sees a gear and hears '齿轮' while touching it, the language becomes immediately comprehensible — resulting in far higher retention than rote memorization.

Embodied Cognition

具身认知

STEM education research shows the brain maps language more effectively when tied to physical movement. Handling engineering kits while using Mandarin terms creates stronger neural pathways — a child who moves a lever while saying '杠杆' remembers 5x more effectively.

Traditional Tuition vs. The Binjai Method

传统补习 vs. 槟佳教学法

We don't just teach vocabulary — we ensure every word is put to work.

Traditional
Binjai Method

Vocabulary Acquisition

词汇习得

Memorizing word lists in isolation
Acquiring terms through building, testing, and debugging

Language Role

语言角色

Language as a subject to study
Language as the medium for discovery

Learning Method

学习方式

Flashcards and repetition drills
Hands-on context with physical manipulation

Student Outcome

学生成果

Knows the word
Understands the logic behind it

"At Binjai Academy, we believe language is best mastered when it is put to work. We don't just teach the word for 'gear' (齿轮); we teach the physics of how a gear functions — ensuring the language is anchored by deep, hands-on experience."

— The Binjai Teaching Philosophy

How We Assess

Assessment as Celebration

评估即庆祝

At ages 6-8, children are forming beliefs about themselves as learners. Our end-of-term reviews help them see their growth and build lasting confidence.

End-of-Term Review & Celebration

学期末回顾与庆祝

The last session of each term is a special day where students look back at everything they've built and learned.

1
Remember & Replay

回顾与重现

Students revisit their favorite builds from the term — catapults, bridges, gear systems. They test them again, show friends, and discuss what they discovered.

"Remember when we built catapults? Let's launch them again and see how far they go. What did you learn about making things fly farther?"
2
Show What You Know

展示所学

Students demonstrate their learning through Chinese character checks (听写) and engineering storytelling — writing about what they built in both English and Mandarin.

  • Chinese Character Check (Tingxie) — writing the vocabulary learned through building
  • Engineering Story — first in English, then in Mandarin with teacher support
  • When something's hard, we work on it together — this isn't just a test, it's a chance to get better
3
Think About Your Learning

反思成长

Students reflect on their term through guided questions that help them see how much they've grown.

  • "What was your favorite thing to build?"
  • "What was hard at first but got easier?"
  • "What made you feel proud?"
4
Celebrate Success

庆祝成功

Students see everything they accomplished — the systems they built, their engineering journals full of drawings and Chinese characters, the experiments they designed.

  • All the cool systems they built (catapults, bridges, gear machines!)
  • Engineering journals full of drawings and Chinese characters
  • The experiments they designed and tested

What Parents Receive

家长收到的报告

After the review session, we share a progress report showing how your child is growing.

Language Learning

语言学习

Chinese Character Test Score

How many characters from this term your child can recognize and write correctly

Engineering & Thinking Skills

工程与思维能力

Engineering Writing

How well your child can explain what they built and learned, in both English and Mandarin

Experiment Skills

How your child asks questions, tests ideas, and figures out why things work the way they do

Communication & Problem-Solving

沟通与解决问题

Engineering Journal

Quality of your child's drawings, observations, and Chinese writing throughout the term

How They Handle Challenges

Examples of how your child approaches problems: Do they keep trying? Do they ask good questions? Are they more comfortable when things don't work the first time?

Why This Matters

为什么这很重要

At ages 6-8, children are forming beliefs about themselves as learners. Our approach helps them develop:

"I can figure things out when I try"
"Making mistakes helps me learn"
"I'm good at building and solving problems"
"I can use two languages to explain my ideas"

These beliefs become part of who they are — and they last a lifetime.
